Bond Package Questions
How was the bond package developed?
The bond projects are based on the recommendations of the New Braunfels ISD Facility Task Force made up of more than 40 community members and school personnel whose goals were to review:
•Current demographic data;
•Existing bond status;
•1999 bond project status;
•Anticipated construction needs or alternatives;
•State bond financing rules;
•Alternative methods for financing construction;
All task force findings and recommendations were made to the New Braunfels ISD Board of Trustees.

If approved, how will the bond affect taxes?
The maximum tax impact on a homestead valued at $100,000 would be $20.40 a year, or $1.70 a month. The tax rate increase would not take effect until the 2007-08 school year.

Will my taxes increase if I am 65 or older?
No. NBISD homeowners 65 years of age or older who have filed for a Homestead Exemption would see no increase in school property taxes as a result of the bond issue. The only exception would be if an individual made improvements on any property and only the value of the improvements would be taxed.

What is the status of 1999 bond projects?
The last bond election was in October of 1999 for $75 million. The referendum included the construction of new additions and renovations of existing space at all 11 campuses. The bond also funded district-wide technology infrastructure upgrades. The last project to be completed under the 1999 bond will be Phase 1 of OakRun Sixth Grade Center, beginning this summer. Link to Bond 1999 for more information about the 1999 bond program.

Can portable buildings accommodate growth?
Yes. Portable buildings are designed to provide temporary solutions for overcrowded conditions. The cost to purchase, establish and furnish a two-classroom portable is close to $100,000.

Who can vote in the May 13 election?
Any person who has been a registered voter for at least 30 days prior to the election and resides within the NBISD boundaries.

What is a school bond?
A school bond is a contract to repay borrowed money on a given date with interest paid semiannually. School districts issue bonds to fund capital improvement projects, borrowing money from investors who purchase the bonds. Similar to a home mortgage, bonds are sold to competing lenders to raise funds to pay the costs of construction and equipping facilities. The bonds are repaid over a period of years.
