Texas
Bluebonnet Award
| • |
This program is only found in Texas. Every year
a group of librarians and teachers get together and carefully select
20 books they think kids will like and give the list to librarians
around the state. |
| • |
Kids in 3rd through 6th grades are
given the opportunity to read at least 5 of the 20 books by January
in order to vote for their favorite book. The votes are sent to the
Texas Library Association from around the state and tallied up. The
winner is announced in February, and the author of the book is honored
in the Spring at the annual Texas Library Association Conference.
Last year's winner was Seadogs: an Epic Ocean Operretta by
Lisa Wheeler and Mark Siegel. |
| • |
Every year the list of 20 books
changes (so books from last year don't count.) Look on the label on
the spine of the book for a Bluebonnet sticker. If it says 2006-2007,
then it is one of this year's 20 books. If it has a different date
or no date at all, it is an oldie but a goodie Bluebonnet book. If
you read one of this year's Bluebonnet books last year, it will count
towards your 5. |
| • |
You have to read the entire book for it to count
as one of your five books. The more Bluebonnet books you read, the
better you can vote. Mrs. Bowen has a favorite but won't tell anyone
until the voting is over! |
| • |
The books are located below the
bluebonnet basket in the main aisle of the library. |
