Concert Band Information--Basic Syllabus and additional Concert Band Information

Text/Materials for Concert Band Students:
Foundations For Superior

**Flute Supplies: White handkerchief
**Oboe Supplies: 3 good reeds at all times; oboe swab, “water” case,
reed case (holds at least 3 reeds), cork grease
**Bassoon Supplies: 3 good reeds at all times; bassoon swab, “water”
case, reed case (holds at least 3 reeds), cork grease
**Clarinet supplies: 3 good reeds at all times, clarinet swab, cork grease;
Check your mouthpiece--Do you have a 5RVLyre?
**Bass Clarinet: 3 good reeds at all times, tenor saxophone swab, cork grease
**Alto Saxophone: 3 good reeds at all times, saxophone swab, neck strap, cork
grease; Check your mouthpiece--Do you have a Selmer C*?
**Trumpet, French horn, Euphonium, Tuba: Valve oil, slide grease, old “rag”,
polish cloth (non-chemical)
**Trombone: Tuning slide grease, slide cream, SuperSlick water bottle, old “rag”,
polish cloth (non-chemical)
**Percussion: We will have required percussion mallet bags with mallets and
sticks available for purchase at the beginning of the year. Bags and mallets
may range from $50-$100. We will let you know the exact cost at the beginning
of the year and will send a note home regarding this as soon as possible.

IV. Home Practice: Amount of Time: 1 & 1/2 hours to 2 hours per week. (20 minutes per day)
V. Course Requirements: Participation in both the classroom and in concert; written worksheets; Composition project; Auditions for Middle School Band; Playing perfectly 7of the 12 major scales used in a typical band setting.
VI. Grading Policy
Students will receive a numerical grade in band. Grades are based on
written tests, playing tests, written work, and performances.
Grades include the following: Written , Playing, Performances, Concerts, unless
otherwise noted
NBISD Grade Weight Policy is used: Homework = 10%, Daily Grade = 45%, Major
Grade = 45%
VII. Band Uniform:
Concert Band students will need two different uniforms:
1. Band Concerts and Contests:
**Band Polo Shirt (tucked in)
Long Black Pants
Black Belt, if needed
Black Closed-toe shoes (Shoes must be all black dress-type shoes)
Black Socks--Long enough to hide ankle/leg when sitting.
2. Parades/Pep Rallies/Band Picture
**Band Polo Shirt (tucked in)
Long Blue Jeans(No patches, designs, or “baggy” jeans; no shorts/capris)
Belt, if needed.
Tennis Shoes (Sports Shoes)
White Socks (Long or short okay)
Students will wear a required band polo shirt that is to be worn for all formal and informal events.
Band shirts can be purchased from ORMS Directors.
VIII. Private Lessons
A. Location: OAKRUN, NBMS, NBHS
B. Time: Mutual time set by instructor and parent
C. Some lessons may be taught during band class.
