Exam for Acceleration Dates Set

Registration for students interested in Credit-by-Examination (without prior instruction) for the purpose of acceleration  is underway.  Testing dates are the following:
October 6,13, 20 – Registration must be returned to the school counselor                    by September 20, 2008
May 3, 10, 17 – Registration must be returned to the school counselor no later than April 4, 2008.
A registration form may be picked up at the campus counselor’s office.
No fees shall be charged by NBISD for these tests; however, the district does require a refundable deposit of $12.50 for each exam taken.
The Credit by Exam for the purpose of acceleration is designed to meet two needs:
*“Skipping” a grade- To qualify, students in grades 1st - 6th must take all four tests and score at least 90% on each exam, thus allowing the student to “skip” a grade.  Candidates should excel in language arts/reading, mathematics, science and social studies, and be physically and emotionally mature for their ages.
* Obtaining credit- Students in grades 6-12 who are highly knowledgeable in the essential knowledge and skills of one or more subjects may obtain credit by scoring at least 90% on the exam/s. These students shall not have had prior instruction in the tested subject area.
Each examination will take approximately 2-3 hours. The exams are administered at the NBISD Education Center, 430 West Mill St. in the Boardroom starting at 8:00 AM.  All test sessions will end at noon.

Legislation passed by the 80th legislature, HB 3851, requires the Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to develop a uniform GPA methodology to be used by Texas universities in admission decisions, including Top 10 percent admissions decisions.

Commissioner of Higher Education, Raymond Paredes held two meetings recently to discuss the development of a uniform Grade Point Average (GPA) methodology.

This legislation will affect how GPA is calculated for all public school students. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has asked the Attorney General to interpret certain provisions of House Bill 3851.
