1st Six Weeks Synopsis

1. TEKS to be covered: 6.1A,6.1B, 6.2A, 6.2B, 6.3A, 6.3B,6.5B, 6.5D, 6.6B, 6.6C

2.Starting Point Topic:
Theory: Staff, clefs, note names;
Playing: correct posture;
Other: Discuss Vocations and Avocations in music.

3. Week 2 Topic:
Theory: Lines and space notes, noteheads;
Playing; instrument maintenance, reading noteheads at ready position, woodwind instruments begin putting reeds on mouthpieces

4. Week 3 topic:
Theory: Sound and Silence, note and rest values with symbols, note and rest ratio charts; Playing: Air with mouthpiece, begin vibrations on mouthpiece;
Woodwinds--sounds on mouthpieces; percussion--proper hand position.

5. Week 4 topic:
Theory: Staff, parts of staff, pulse;
Playing: hand position, playing position, begin sounds on instruments to steady sounds on instrument. (Brass--siren and straight sound studies on mouthpiece)

6. Week 5 Topic:
Theory: Time Signatures, counting.
Playing: Steady sounds on one note, adding fingers to notes, Brass--lip slurs on instruments)
All instruments go home on Friday.

7. Week 6 topic:
Theory: Apply all theory to book;
Play: begin to play and count in book

8. Major Projects or grades:
4 Written Tests

9.TAKS preparation contribution, if any:
Students will begin to use note taking and study skills; Note and rest ratios which visualizes important math concepts (Whole, half, fourth, eighth, sixteenth values added and interchanged with each other)

10. Writing assessments, if any: Note-taking

11. Use of technology, if any: Students will take Digital pictures of each other which will display the student with proper posture and hand position while holding the instrument.
Pictures to be used as part of electronic portfolio.
