Beginner Band Information--Basic Syllabus and additional Beginner Band Information
2008-2009


  I.   Text/Materials:
        A.   Ed Sueta Band Method for specified instrument; percussion, see supply list.
        B.   Instrument/Supplies
        C.   Pocket folder with prongs,  paper,Pencil, box of Kleenex

 II.   Course Description:
        Beginning Instrumental Music

III.  Course Objectives:
        A.    Display/Perform Proper Instrumental Technique
        B.    Knowledge/Use of Music Theory
        C.    Develop Critical Listening Skills
        D.    Broaden Self-expression
        E.    Opportunity for Cultural Growth
        F.    Develop Physical Conditioning
        G.    Develop Mental and Physical Discipline

IV.    Home Practice
        A.    Amount of Time:  1 & 1/2 hours to 2 hours per   week.  (20 minutes per day)
        B.    Location: Bedroom (preferred)
        C.    Equipment Needed (other than instrument):
                1.  Band Book
                2.  Sturdy Chair
                3.  Optional--Metronome, Wire Music Stand

   V.    Course Requirements:  Participation in both the classroom and in concert; written worksheets;   Composition project; Auditions  for  Middle School Band; Playing perfectly 5 of the 12 major scales used in a typical band setting.

VI.   Grading Policy
Students will receive a numerical grade in band.  Grades are based on  written tests, playing  tests, written work, and performances.
Grades include the following: Written , Playing, Performances, Concerts, unless otherwise noted
NBISD Grade Weight Policy is used: Homework = 10%, Daily Grade = 45%, Major Grade = 45%

VII.  Band Uniform:
Band Shirts--Available from ORMS Directors
Long Blue Jeans
Tennis Shoes
(Band Shirt, Long blue jeans, tennis shoes make up the uniform required for concerts and picture.)

VIII. Private Lessons
    A.   Location:  OAKRUN, NBMS, NBHS
    B. Time:  Mutual time set by instructor and parent
    C.  Some lessons may be taught during band class.

A little more information regarding the OakRun Beginner Band program:

  1. Beginner band meets as a regular class during the day.
  2. No musical background is necessary for playing in the band.
  3. Band classes are set up in groups of like-instruments. (homogeneously)
  4. After-school rehearsals are not required in the OakRun Beginner Band program.
  5. A minimum of 20 minutes daily of home practice is suggested for normal progress.
  6. There are two major concerts given during the school year.  Students will be required to be in attendance at all concerts.
  7. Some of the very  large, expensive instruments are owned by the school and may be issued at a nominal fee to students selected to play that instrument. (Mouthpiece and Supplies to  be  supplied  by  student)
  8. Arrangements should be made for students to have their instruments by the first day of school
  9. Band begins the first day of school.
  10. Students will bring home instruments after they have been taught proper care and maintenance.
  11. Band Shirts are required.
